1. What is a Universal Account Number (UAN)?

UAN is a 12-digit number provided to each member of EPFO.
The UAN acts as an umbrella for the many Member IDs allotted to an individual. This number connects different Member Identification Numbers (Member Id) given to one member under a single Universal Account Number.

A PF Account Identifier with Identity Verification details lets members access various online services directly, without needing employer help.

2. What is KYC?

Know Your Customer, or KYC, is a one-time process. It helps verify subscriber identities by linking the PF Account Identifier with Identity Verification details.

The employees/employers need to provide Identity Verification details, viz. Aadhaar, PAN, and bank details help uniquely identify employees. This allows for smooth online services.

3. How can the employer generate a UAN for newly joined employees without a UAN?

The employer must log in to the EPF employer portal with the Establishment ID and password. Then, follow these steps:

  • Click on the “Register Individual”. Check the previous employment as NO.
  • Go to the “Member” section.
  • Enter the employee’s details such as PAN, Aadhaar, bank details, etc.
  • Approve all details in the “Approval” section.
  • A new Employee Provident Fund ID is generated by EPFO and the employer can link the PF account with the PF Account Identifier of the employee.

4. How can an employee generate his UAN on his own?

An employee can generate his UAN by visiting the unified member portal ‘https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface’ and clicking on Direct Employee Provident Fund ID Allotment by Employees. A valid Aadhaar number with a registered mobile is pre-requisite to avail this facility. Employee has to provide employment details to get PF Account Identifier.

5. How can a member know their UAN?

  • Visit unified member portal.
  • Select Member ID, Aadhaar or PAN.
  • Enter details such as name, date of birth, mobile number, and e-mail ID as per EPFO records.
  • Click on the “Get Authorisation Pin” option
  • A PIN will be sent to your mobile number registered with EPFO.
  • Enter the PIN and your PF Account Identifier will be sent to the mobile number.

6. How can a member activate their UAN?

  • Go to the EPF Member Portal. Click “Activate UAN” or choose PF Account Identifier Activation under Employee Centric Services on the UMANG APP.
  • Select any one of the following: UAN, Member ID, Aadhaar, or PAN.
  • Please provide more details like your Name, Date of Birth, Mobile Number, and Email ID. Then, click on “Get Authorization PIN.”
  • An authorization PIN will be sent to the mobile number registered with EPFO.
  • Enter this PIN and click on “Validate OTP and activate PF Account Identifier.”

Employee Provident Fund ID will be activated and the password will be sent to member’s mobile. Now the member can log in to the unified member portal using his UAN and password.

7. Can one mobile number be linked to multiple UANs?

One mobile number can be used for registration with one Employee Provident Fund ID only.

8. How do I activate UAN via offline mode?

No, PF Account Identifier registration and activation are done only online.

9. Can contractual employees register their UAN and avail themselves of online facilities?

Both contractual and direct employees can access Employee Provident Fund ID facilities online once they register and activate their accounts.

10. In which format should I create my UAN password?

The password must be alphanumeric, include at least 1 special character, and be 8 to 25 characters long. Special character are: !@#$%^&*( )

11. What can I do if my UAN is not seeded with Aadhaar?

Members can seed their Employee Provident Fund ID with Aadhaar by visiting the member portal. Thereafter, the employer must approve the same to complete the linkage. Or, a member can ask his employer to link Aadhaar with PF Account Identifier.

Members can link their UAN with Aadhaar using the “e-KYC Portal” on the EPFO website. They can also use the e-KYC service in the UMANG APP. No employer intervention is needed.

12. My UAN was generated during the initial days of after the launch of Employee Provident Fund ID facility. My employer erroneously linked it with the wrong Aadhar number. How can I correct the same?

  • Members must apply for corrections to the EPFO Regional Office where their EPF account is held. They can do this by submitting a joint request.

13. How can I seed my KYC details with UAN?

  • Login to your EPF account at the unified member portal.
  • Click on the “KYC” option in the “Manage” section.
  • You can select the details (PAN, Bank Account, Aadhar, etc.) which you want to link with Employee Provident Fund ID.
  • Fill in the requisite fields.
  • Now click on the “Save” option.
  • Your request will be displayed in “KYC Pending for Approval”.
  • Once employer approves the details the message will be changed to “Digitally approved by the employer”
  • Once UIDAI confirms your details, “Verified by UIDAI” is displayed against your Aadhaar.

14. How can I seed my bank account details?

  • Login to your EPF account at the unified member portal.
  • Enter your bank account number and IFSC code.
  • The details have to be approved by your employer.
  • Once approved the bank account gets seeded.

15. Can I change my already-seeded bank account number?

Yes. You can update the bank account number as many times as you need by following the steps above. However, the bank account details cannot be changed during pendency of any claim with EPFO.

16. What precautions should I take while seeding Bank account number?

You should seed active bank account to which you are either an individual or joint holder with your spouse. Also ensure that the bank account does not have a deposit cap greater than your withdrawal benefit.

17. I have changed my job. Should I activate my UAN again?

You need to activate the Employee Provident Fund ID only once. You do not have to reactivate it every time you switch jobs.

18. Do I have to pay any fees for UAN registration?

No, Employee Provident Fund ID registration is free of charge and you do not have to pay any fees to activate it.

19. Can I activate my UAN through SMS or the mobile app?

You cannot activate UAN through SMS. But, you can activate EPF Account Number through the UMANG App. To download the UMANG app, please visit the Google Play Store.

20. What are the documents required for a change in the Date of Birth of EPF members?

Any of the following documents may be accepted as valid proof of date of birth:

  • Birth certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths.
  • Any school/education-related certificate
  • Certificate based on the service records of the Central/State Government Organisation.
  • Passport
  • Any other reliable document issued by a government department.
  • If there’s no proof of date of birth, a medical certificate from a Civil Surgeon is required. This must include checking the member and a sworn affidavit from the member, confirmed by a qualified court.
  • Aadhaar / e-Aadhaar:

You can change your date of birth based on your Aadhaar or e-Aadhaar. The new date can be up to three years earlier or later than the one EPFO has on record.

21. What are the facilities given to members through the UAN-driven Member Portal?

The EPF Account Number-driven Member Portal facilitates the following for members:

  1. Services:
    • Self-generation of Universal Account Number
    • E-Nomination
    • Change in name, date of birth, gender
    • Enter Identity Verification details.
    • Seamless transfer of PF accumulation from previous employment
    • Advance claim for the outbreak of the pandemic (Covid-19)

    • Entry of date of exit from service

22. Do I need to upload documents to the EPFO Portal?

No, you are not required to upload documents on the EPFO Portal. Just the name as per the document and the document number must be specified.

23. What are the minimum details which are required to be linked with UAN for availing online services?

Mobile, Aadhar and Bank account number.

24. Is linking PAN with EPF Account Number beneficial for availing online services?

Yes, if you link your PAN number with your EPF Account Number, then you can avail tax benefits on EPF withdrawal.

The name as per Aadhaar and PAN must be the same as that in PF records for User Authentication to be successfully completed. Please note that the name as printed on the PAN card may be different from that in the Income Tax database. In such a case, you must enter the name according to the IT database to ensure it links successfully with EPF Account Number. If there is a name mismatch, then a name change request can be raised.

26. What should I do if my employer is not approving KYC?

If your employer won’t approve Identity Verification details, you can ask administration or HR directly. If it is taking more time, you can escalate it to a higher authority in the organisation.

27. How do I know that the employer has approved the KYC I updated?

The status will be shown against the updated User Authentication document on the same page. The system will also trigger an SMS to your registered mobile number.

28. My employer entered incorrect PAN and bank account details by mistake.

You can log in to your member portal and update the PAN and bank account details yourself. The same will be digitally approved/updated by the employer.

29. My employer has not updated my date of exit despite the lapse of two months after leaving the job. How can I update my date of exit?

  • Visit Member Unified Portal
  • Enter UAN, password and CAPTCHA.
  • Go to Manage and click Mark Exit.
  • Choose ‘PF Account Number’ from the ‘select employment’ drop-down.
  • Enter ‘Date of Exit’ and ‘Reason for Exit’
  • Click on the option ‘Request OTP’ and enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
  • Select the checkbox.
  • Click ‘Update’
  • Click ‘OK’

30. How do I change my UAN linked mobile number?

After logging into the Member Interface of Unified Portal, you can change your mobile number in the “Member Profile” section.

31. Can I apply for an online claim if my mobile is not linked with Aadhaar?

No, you cannot submit an online claim if your mobile is not linked with Aadhaar. At the time of claim submission, OTP is sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile only.

32. What should I do if my Aadhaar is not linked with my mobile?

Please visit your nearest Aadhaar Service Centre. For more details, you can visit the official website of UIDAI https://uidai.gov.in.

33. What should I do if I have forgotten my password?

Please click on “Forgot Password” at the Member Interface of the Unified Portal. Provide your UAN with CAPTCHA. The system will send the OTP to your mobile, which is seeded with EPF Account Number, and you can reset the password.

34. What to do if I forgot my password and my registered mobile with UAN has also changed?

Please click on “Forgot Password” at the Member Interface of the Unified Portal. Provide your EPF Account Number with CAPTCHA. The system will ask whether the OTP is to be sent to the registered mobile or some other mobile. The system will ask you to enter your basic details (Name, DOB, and Gender). After the successful matching of basic details, the system will ask you to provide your Aadhar or PAN. If the User Authentication details are matched, the system will ask for a new mobile number and the OTP will be sent to the new mobile. After the successful verification of the OTP, you can reset your password.

35. What should I do if I change jobs and join somewhere else?

You need to simply declare your EPF Account Number to your subsequent employer.

36. Which claims can you file online?

You can file a Withdrawal, Advance, or Pension claim after e-Nomination online. Do this via the EPFO Member Portal or the Umang app.

37. How can I view/download my passbook?

First of all, you need to log in to the UAN Member Portal with your UAN and password. Then go to the menu ‘Download’ and select ‘Download Passbook’. A link is provided to download the PDF of this passbook.

38. How can I view/download my UAN card?

You need to log in first with your valid EPF Account Number and password. Then go to the ‘Download’ menu and select the option ‘Download UAN Card’. A PDF of the UAN card can be downloaded.

39. I am not able to see the Passbook, or is the Passbook not available?

If you work in an exempted establishment, your passbook won’t be on the UAN portal. You may contact your establishment to get the PF statement.

40. I was allotted two UANs. What should I do?

If you receive two UANs, it may be due to your previous employer not filling in the Date of Exit in the ECR filing. It might also be because you applied for a service transfer at your current workplace.

In such a case, you are suggested to immediately report the matter to your employer and through email to EPFO ([email protected]) by mentioning, both -your current EPF Account Number and your previous UAN(s). Once verified, your old UAN(s) will be blocked, and the current UAN will stay active.

As the details are matched with the previous Member ID w.r.t. the current Member ID, if there is any deviation in name etc., it will not allow for linking/listing the Member ID.

42. How to change the name and DOB in EPFO records as per Aadhaar card?

  • Visit the Member Unified Portal as mentioned in

  • Click Sign-in
  • Click Manage and then click Change Basic Details.
  • Enter Aadhaar, name and DOB as per Aadhaar. Click Save/Submit. Click Yes.
